Commissioners Worry Budget Cuts Will Result in Higher Local Taxes

A Mifflin County Commissioner told The Lewistown Sentinel that the county could see cuts in state funding for human services, the courts, public safety, community and economic development, the environment, tourism and agriculture.

HARRISBURG (June 28, 2009) - During a meeting earlier this month, Mifflin County Commissioners adopted a resolution urging state lawmakers to create "a responsible 2009-10 budget that maintains funding for core government services and does not shift costs to the local level," according to a recent report in The Lewistown Sentinel.

Commissioner Mark Sunderland told the newspaper that the county is bracing for potential cuts in state funding for human services, the courts, public safety, community and economic development, the environment, tourism and agriculture.

County commissioners across the state have said such cuts will force them to raise local taxes, including the property tax.

"The state needs to live up to its responsibilities," Juniata County Commission Chairman Jeffrey Zimmerman told the Sentinel. "A budget that does not fund their mandates is irresponsible."
